Lantana

So I need recommendations on how to transplant plants. More specifically what I need to do to prep for digging up the plant and then moving it to a new place in the yard. See, this is my problem:I think I can probably get through the summer having it here, but after the summer it needs to be moved to a different part of the yard.

So I guess my questions really come down to:
1. Should I move it now, or wait until after the summer?
2. What do I need to do to prep it for moving (cut back, water well, etc)?
3. And I'm also going to assume that I ought to just move it directly to where I want it to be as opposed to putting it in a pot and then transplanting it later...

Lantana is pretty tough. If you think it can last the summer where it is and still get to grow, leave it. Otherwise my next choice would be to put in a 5 gallon pot and put in in the shade for a week or so until you see new growth, then move it to morning sun and finally to full sun. Then plant it in the fall into a hole you have prepared.

But it will probably make it if you just transplant. Just be sure the soil is amended so it doesn't hold water or allow the plant to get too wet or too dry. You will probably have to cut it back to balance the lose of roots. You can also put up a shade shelter - a sheet and a couple of hoops is what I use in a pinch - until you see new growth. I start new lantana cuttings in June and then put them in pots when I see new growth.

About an hour before you dig it , water it real well. Have your new hole ready. Dig it, move it fast and get it into the new hole. Waiting for fall would be better.
