Rain garden

A picture of the rain garden full of rain.  Since taking this photo on 3/11, the monarda has grown another couple of inches (so it won't be fully under water).

Nice work!!! We have such good drainage here, I never got a chance to mess with such things. Silly builders and their proper grading. As unattractive as our neighborhood may be in many ways, everything drains beautifully.

Here is a neighborhood approach to building rain gardens in Western Washington http://raindogdesigns.com/wordpress/?page_id=1877

Can the Monarda take seasonal flooding like that? For how long? I have lots of wet boggy places, but eventually they will go dry. Plants that can take both extremes and be as pretty as Monarda, would definitely be worth growing for me.

@Ally - I'm not sure actually; but Daphne told me to put the ones I had in all sorts of different locations with different amounts of water/sun to see how they do. So far, the one in mostly sun but Dry is doing the best (with semi-regular rain events, obviously). The one that is mostly shade and dry (again, recently with regular rain events) isn't doing as well - it's still growing, but it's not nearly as big as the other one. This is the last one - Full sun, seasonal deluges, it's grown enough now that I don't think it will be covered with water during storms...

Also - my rain garden area drains pretty fast - less than 18 hours...

That looks like a nice improvement for your drainage problem. I planted a monarda today in full sun, dry soil. We will see how it does. I hope as well as everyone said...I'm excited for those flowers!
